The ratio is 10:1. Yes, those are the stats we are talking about when it comes to the men vs women ratio in cycling! Have you ever wondered about the reasons for this gender imbalance? Well, let me tell you that it's got nothing to do with ability, but a lot to do with opportunity and the environment.

I have been riding, or re-biking as I prefer to call it, for three and a half years now. During this period, I have seen that even in the near ideal location and infrastructure provided by the National Capital Region, the percentage of women cyclists as opposed to their male counterparts is a dismal 10:1. If you do some number crunching, you will find that the average strength of most cycling groups hovers at around 500 plus members. Out of this impressive figure, the regulars on group rides are at best between 20 to 25 riders. And how many of them are women...two or three at most on a very good day!!

Why's that you wonder? Well, like I said earlier, it's not for the want of ability, but the lack of opportunity and prevailing mindset. Safety is the biggest stumbling block...whether it's personal safety being a woman or safety as a cyclist on congested and unsafe roads. The fear of riding alone, traffic concerns and the insensitivity of motorists towards cyclists, all combine to keep women off the saddle. In addition to that is the lack of cycling infrastructure and the apathy of the powers that be. The major factor, in my opinion, which contributes largely towards dissuading women from cycling is the lack of support and encouragement from the environment. Not to forget the feeling of intimidation, albeit in a smaller measure, felt in the company of the competitive, testosterone driven, stats oriented, number crunching male riders!
It was about two years ago that I initiated women specific rides by the name of Women On The Saddle. The aim was to create awareness and provide a platform for women to experience the joys of cycling. It was based on a simple model - the core team planned the ride, route, distance and mentors. The event was created and word spread through facebook and friends while the logistics were provided by our support group in the form of cycles, helmets and refreshments. The first Women On The Saddle Ride had 19 riders, nine of whom were making their debut run. The follow up ride a week later supported those numbers and it seemed like we were on our way to a better gender ratio in the cycling community. Alas! As I write this, only two-three of those debut riders are still riding, albeit intermittently.

My resolve to keep the flame burning refuses to be dimmed by the numbers and towards this end, I have started a small women's cycling group at my present location called Babs Cyclists. As of now, there are four of us who head out for our daily rides on the track and trails that abound in this small town in Central India. The route, distance and time are variable in keeping with the objective of combining our passion for cycling with the joys of discovering the verdant surroundings.

The beacon of hope shines bright in the form of some amazing women cyclists who have made their mark in time bound endurance events like the Brevets and Desert 500; travelled the toughest routes, like Leh-Manali and the Tour of the Nilgiris; competed with distinction in triathlons and duathlons. With cyclists of the caliber of Divya Tate, Anju Khosla, Shailja Singh Sridhar, Usha Prasad, Vasu Ritu Primlani riding in these awe inspiring rides, the future of women cyclists is secure. Salute' ladies, more power to you all. As Susan B. Anthony said, "I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel...the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood." Watch this space for more on the Iron Ladies and their indomitable spirit. Cheers all!
Through this blog post, I would like to highlight a dangerous aspect of cycling on roads. It was the winter of 2011 when an accident left me with severe injuries in my right eye. I was riding with my fellow riders from Delhi to Murthal when I had to face the ire of reckless bikers plying on the wrong side of the road, oblivious to the fact that cyclists also have a right to the road.

As is the rule, we were cycling on the left side when a biker coming from the wrong side of the road hit my cycle. Instead of being apologetic for the accident, he got aggressive and shouted at me for using the road. We tried to calmly explain that we were riding on the left and it was infact them on the wrong side but it had no effect. They told us that the road was meant for motorised transport and cyclists had no right to be on their turf. In order to avoid the matter from worsening since we had to head back to Delhi, we told them to let it be and that we should just go on our way. As they drove off, we started to pedal on to our destination. Hardly had 10 to 15 mins passed when we saw the bikers returning and before anyone could realise it, they came head on towards me and attacked me with an iron rod. As they smashed my face, they shouted out, 'Cyclists are not allowed here' and sped off.

I was badly injured and bleeding profusely, unable to see due to my injured eye as my fellow cyclists gathered to get me help. Luckily some locals seeing my condition called an ambulance but when the doctor at the local hospital saw the seriousness of my injuries, he suggested that I be rushed to Delhi if I wanted to save my eye. It was my good fortune that an unknown rider offered to call his support vehicle and rushed me to the AIIMS trauma centre where the helpful staff took my case on priority and provided me with the best treatment. And as soon as I was able to, I took up the case with the police administration in Murthal. Now, this is when I saw the bad side of the police who in spite of knowing the identity of the bikers who attacked me, made no attempts to nab them and instead told me that I would be the one who would be troubled. In my condition, I wasn't capable of plying between Delhi and Murthal police station on a regular basis as the police said they would make me do for the case. With multiple eye surgeries lined up and a large family at home, I was left with no choice but to let things be.

This incident left me thinking that although we have people in our city (Delhi) who encourage cycling and in other metropolitan cities as well, there is a large majority of people who have no awareness or concern for cyclists or their safety. I now make it a point to tell as many cyclists to take all the precautionary measures while riding and not visit any place without proper information about it. The incident happened on a busy road and though all of us were riding in the by-lane, still we were blamed, not the bikers who were on the wrong side, carrying iron rods and beating people recklessly. The fact of the matter is that the onus is on us cyclists to be careful while riding and planning rides, and our safety is in our own hands.

As I write this, it's been almost two years since my accident and my eye has still not fully recovered. I remain a passionate cycling advocate but underline the need for safety while on the saddle. I hope my story will go towards bringing awareness and the need for safety measures for all cyclists. At the end, I would like to thank all my fellow riders, the unknown rider who came to my rescue like an angel and the doctors at AIIMS who provided timely treatment.

Stay safe friends. Happy riding
1. Do long rides on weekends.

<h5 class="uiStreamMessage userContentWrapper" data-ft="{"type":1,"tn":"K"}" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: 12.727272033691406px; margin: 0px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; word-break: break-word; word-wrap: break-word;">
<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3,"tn":"K"}" style="color: #333333; font-size: small; line-height: 1.38;">2. Do some leg and shoulder exercises as there would be quite a bit of road jerks hitting your shoulders.
3. Do some slow runs, rope skipping and brisk walks.
4. In the last 10 days, do not change/adjust anything on the bike. If you have to change the tyres, do it 15 days before a long ride and adjust the saddle height if needed, but keep the same saddle you already have.
5. Start riding with the same cycling shorts and Top/ jersey that you would want to wear for the ride day. Wearing a light color is recommended.
6. Get your cycle serviced earlier and don’t get it touched by a mechanic in the last few days.
7. A few things you would want to carry for a long ride should include: a good pair of Gloves/Sunglasses; 2 bottle cages; reflective vest; head light and tail light; spare tubes, Puncture repair kit and air pump; whistle; cell phone; some cash; energy bars, a pudia of black salt/kala namak, some dry fruits and chikki.

<h5 class="uiStreamMessage userContentWrapper" data-ft="{"type":1,"tn":"K"}" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: 12.727272033691406px; margin: 0px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; word-break: break-word; word-wrap: break-word;">
<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3,"tn":"K"}" style="color: #333333; font-size: small; line-height: 1.38;">8. Stop cycling/exercising 2 days before the Big ride
9. Don’t get into arguments at home/work prior to the ride as you need to be focused on the road.
10. Don’t use headphones while riding that day and also put your cell phone on silent mode.
11. Be friendly to the locals while riding through congested cities and villages. Inevitably you will be asked questions by passing two wheelers, tell them you are unable to talk for long as you are out of breath.
12. IGNORE wired and stupid comments if showered upon, normally the villagers are harmless but inquisitive. If asked about the price of your bike, say it under 12K no matter how much you paid for it.
13. Always keep at least one of your water bottles full. Remember to Drink before you are thirsty and Eat before you are hungry
14. If your ride is not a race then ride steady, not fast. Strategise your ride, divide it into small distances you ride normally and time it and take a break of a minute at each section. Don't burn yourself out before you reach the half way point.
15. As we do normally when we ride, ride constantly for an hour or 22~25 Km and take a water break of 2 mins.
16. Make small groups of 3~4 riders whom you ride with normally and turn by turn lead your group.
17. Don’t ride fast and burn out soon. Use the cooler sections of the day to the maximum and take fewer breaks then.
18. If you happen to cramp, which we all do, don’t quit, manage it. Remember, "Pain is Temporary and quitting is forever". If you do cramp, get off the bike and do some stretching. Have a Soda Pop with black salt in it or just plain water and add some salt in it.
19. Start hydrating yourself 2 days before the ride. Drink plenty of fluids, be it water, juice or anything else. Increase your salt intake in the last few days as you are going to lose a lot of through sweat.
20. The day before the ride, eat lots of Carbs as in Pasta, noodles, etc. Sleep early, listen to relaxing music and if possible come back home early from work.
21. Remember you are already a champion attempting a long ride and not many people have a mindset like yours, so if you feel exhausted and are in pain beyond your withholding limits, remember there is always a next time and DNF is anyways better than DNS.
22. Remember age and body structure have nothing to do with completing a long ride. It’s all in the mind so believe in yourself. Everybody who has taken up long distance riding on Indian roads has a very strong mindset.

While most people see a bike, Muyambi Muyambi and Molly Burke see potential. Their organization, Bicycles Against Poverty, uses a microfinance model to distribute bikes in rural Uganda, turning what would be a three-hour walk into a swift spin to health clinics, markets, and schools.

"I’m from southern Uganda, but grew up traveling often to the north, an area deeply affected by war,” says 24-year-old Muyambi. “Traveling showed me how people lived, and it revealed their struggles.” Muyambi found a way to make a difference while studying at Pennsylvania’s Bucknell University, where he met Burke. Together, they developed their nonprofit, which distributes bikes to low-income entrepreneurs who make monthly payments of about $3 to cover half the price of a bike. The organization, which has issued more than 660 bikes so far, then provides workshops in financial management.

While looking to expand their program, the cyclophiles raise funds through their annual 3,200-mile bike tour across the U.S. It’s not easy—Muyambi works as a civil engineer in Washington, D.C., and Burke draws no salary from the organization. Says Muyambi, “It’s amazing to feel you’re contributing to the people you love, the country you love, and the world you love—because they are all connected.”

THE INTERVIEW

National Geographic Traveler: Where did you get your inspiration?

Muyambi Muyambi: I’m from Rukungiri, in southern Uganda, but I grew up traveling all across the country, seeing how people live, seeing their struggles. I came to see that a bicycle is all about potential. The bikes provide access to health clinics, markets for trading, clean water, and schools—they mean, for example, that someone who is sick and needs to walk six-plus miles to a hospital can be transported by bike instead. They’re life-changing tools.

NGT: How can bikes help alleviate poverty?

Molly Burke: Getting bicycles to developing countries helps individuals create their own opportunities. We give workshops as part of our program. In the opening workshop our staff members ask the community, “What is poverty?” One villager in Acholi said, “Poverty is lack of transportation. Poverty is being confined to an area where you can’t get to trade your farm goods, buy the products you need to, or get to the health center when it’s necessary. Poverty is being stuck and not being able to leave your area.” A $100 bicycle can changes lives.

NGT: How did you get the courage to launch Bicycles Against Poverty?

MB: We’re entrepreneurs. We lack those parts of our brain where fear should kick in. We don’t really think in terms of hurdles or needing courage, it’s just a matter of when and where the “what” gets accomplished. It’s funny because I don’t think of courage as something we need. Money, resources, time, and the occasional search for focus? Those are things I think about.

NGT: Where are you headed next?

MB: What’s remarkable about Bicycles Against Poverty is that it's unbelievably scalable. We want to expand within East Africa first. We have Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia on our list. Then I want to head to South Africa, India, westernChina, Central America, the Middle East. And let’s not forget about the Deep South in the U.S.

NGT: What’s your ultimate goal?

MB: To provide access to opportunities across the globe. In the words of Hillary Clinton, “Talent is universal, opportunity is not.” Bicycles Against Poverty lives by this. We understand that greatness is across the word, but access to the opportunity to make the most of your potential is not always readily available.

MM: I believe in bicycles so much. I see them as something that’s important to everyone. I remember wondering where I’d end up in life, but giving back to the community was always on my mind. Now I’m just looking for the resources to continue doing it.

It’s 5.30 am and I’m standing in line at the New Delhi Railway Station security
check-in, which even at this relatively early hour is snaking into 50 odd people, most of them tourists since the train
stops at the travelers mecca, Agra. As I slowly inch forward, I happen to glance at
the ceiling and am instantly transfixed at the sight of an installation high up
on the wall. It’s a bicycle with dozens of brightly painted chai ki ketlees in egg yolk yellows, mossy greens, sapphire blues and poppy reds, all merrily strung up around its frame. With the middle tube adorning a wire rack of chai ki glassies, it’s the quintessential Indian Railways tea stall transplanted onto a regular aam admi cycle. The bicycle itself is a
work of art with its frame painted military green, offset by a yellow coloured
fork, its spokes and rims a psychedelic mix of red and yellow, sporting an all
blue hub.

work of art, which is a fitting rival to the Monalisa in my opinion! Kudos to the artist for its simple genius with the final flourish proclaiming chai garam splashed onto a big, bright yellow kettle. It’s a delightful start not only to the day but also my
journey, which is on many levels since I am relocating after a period of five
years, the longest that I have been in one place being an Army wife. Although life in a small town cantonment is diametrically opposite to that of the National Capital Region, change is something I am adept at, regardless of the end of the spectrum I find myself in.

As I'm about to board the train, I realise there's still some time in hand and although there's a book in my handbag, the legacy of
many a train journeys' pulls me towards the enticing fanned out glossy display of a book
kiosk. I scan around for a magazine as the vendor
hands me the latest issue of a health magazine. Hmm…while not my usual pick, why not I think, spurred on
by the thought of the distinctly un-healthy veggie cutlets and French fries breakfast awaiting me on the Shatabdi!

With the
magazine tucked under my arm, I settle down in my seat and once the killer sweetness packed in a Frootie has been served, I pick up the magazine. There are the usual suspects, magical diets and tips on
great abs, healthy recipes and size zero figures in leotards. As I flip through the glossy pages, I stop short at a picture of a woman cyclist. Sporting the happiest of smiles, astride a yellow mountain bike is a well known face in cycling circles, Malvika Jain, and I eagerly dive into the article about her amazing exploits.

This has to be a sign am thinking, not a mere coincidence. I mean, how else can it be explained...my spotting the bike installation at a platform I have walked through multitudes of times before, randomly picking up a magazine I generally never buy only to find a write up about a woman cyclist I know! And all this in the span of half an hour on a nondescript morning in June at the railway station!!

I read it as a sign telling me that whatever the circumstances, I must continue to follow my passion and pedal on. You see, ever since deciding to relocate to a small town, which even Google could not find, I'd been battling doubts over my ability to continue cycling, With very few known faces, absolutely none who were cyclists, no cycling support as in a local bike shop or anyone to ride with, I had been brooding. That morning of the signs turned things around for me as I got off the train brimming with anticipation and excitement over the immeasurable possibilities awaiting me. Inshallah!

It was my first out
station cycling tour and I didn't know what to carry and what to leave out. I
have a bad habit of filling up my bags with everything possible, and I did the
same on this occasion. I was very excited and eager at the thought of riding in
the mountains, though all I knew was that I could use the 24 gears properly, which was essential as knowing the correct use of each gear assumes greater
significance in mountain riding, especially during the climbs.

On the day of the departure, I found myself standing outside Himachal Bhawan with my parents. I didn't know anyone except Supratim who had gone to buy
some sweets from Bengali Market due to a delay in departure. As I
stood with the other cyclists, a rider came towards me, smiled and said, “Oh!
So you are Aman Puri? I have heard a lot about you!” I was quite taken aback coz' though it wasn't anything new, hearing it put like that even before
the start of the tour, added to the pressure and put even more responsibility on
my shoulders. I smiled back and just said, hello.

As the bus headed out towards Mclodeganj in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, I began interacting with those sitting near me. I also took some lessons from Supratim who's a
very experienced rider. Next morning when I woke up, there was complete silence as everyone was still asleep. The only sound was that of the bus
driving into the mountains on a beautiful and chilly winter morning in January.
We reached Mclodeganj and were to stay there for the night, the next morning
being the race day. Now the event isn't actually a race, I just like the sound
of the word, it’s basically an exploring tour, riding 300 KM in three days in
the mountains. The next morning as I went downstairs from my room, I was in my cycling gear when Robin Grosner
asked me, “Hey, you are Aman Puri, right? You ride every day? I see your posts on
facebook.“ At the time, I didn’t know him, but again I was surprised and happy
too, as I realised people knew me, so I didn't feel alone in the tour any longer.

on what was to be a mostly downhill ride of 70 km on the first day. Being my first time in the mountains,
I was going quite fast due to excitement, at times clocking nearly 60-70 kmph on
downhill. The day went off fine as I found riding downhill easy and
didn’t feel any muscle fatigue. The food was good, the butter chicken awesome and I ended up overeating as I was very hungry. It was a pleasant
sight seeing the monks, and I made friends with Raghav Gangotra from Delhi,
Pooja from Mumbai, Robin and Anita from Gurgaon among others.

Day 2: 38 riders started
off on day 2, which was to be the toughest day as the maximum climbing had to be done.
The ride started pretty late, at around 10 am and by then the sun was bright and shining,
so we began slowly. We rode through breathtaking scenery of the majestic mountains in almost pin drop silence with only the sound of birds and our bike chain and tyres. Being Out There had planned the route well
as there was minimal traffic towards this side of the mountains.

I made friends with Sumender, the fastest rider on the tour. He was
training hard for the Leh tour and was always ahead of me at least by 40 min, while
Supratim was 15-20 min ahead of me. As I
said, although it was not a race, I was timing myself. So, Sumender used to be
the 1st one, followed by Supratim and then me. Day 2 was a pretty harsh one and
I still remember how I made those climbs. Although we started together, once everyone
got into their own pace, we rode alone.

It was the last
climb before lunch point, the toughest one, and I was feeling so
hungry that I ate a whole box of chewing gum. I was feeling somewhat weird and
still very hungry, so I looked for some edible leaves, which I guess were Tulsi as I stopped to
rest for 30 min. Then Anita, my newly made friend from day 1, rode in
and came to my aid with some biscuits that she was carrying along. I ate up all of
them and we rode together till the lunch point, which
was a very steep uphill.

for lunch, I took off for the remaining 35-40 km. It became completely dark and we
were riding till 8 pm or so. Then when no one reached the end point, the
sweep vehicle came to take us to the BIR paragliding center where we were given rooms
to stay for the night and recover from the hard day of riding 90 km.

Day 3: It was a nice sunny
day again, with around 80 km left to be covered in a mix of downhill and uphill.
After the 40 riders on day 1, we were down to less than 30 riders on day 3. Some riders had gone back home, some had got injured and some had dropped out and were in the sweep vehicle to watch us riding. Since I had plans to
ride the fastest on this day, I wanted everyone to go ahead so I could
ride comfortably on my own.

I was the 3rd or 4th last rider to start. The downhill was
full of gravel and quite slippery as I almost had a fall in the first 10 min of
the ride but luckily managed to retain my balance. But my luck didn't hold out for long as after 30 min, I had a bad fall and slipped downhill on gravel along with my bike for
at least 2 meters. I was bleeding from the scratches on the knee and elbow but
was happy too as it was my first cycling fall. Then as the knee began to hurt, I called up
the emergency numbers we had been given. There was no signal, so I waited for
15 min for somebody to turn up, but when nobody came, I started riding.

Luckily, soon after I came
across a rider from the BSF who had a medical kit. As he started administering
first aid to my bleeding knee, Francis, the reporter from Sports Illustrated magazine came up. He reminded me that he had told me on the previous day not to ride so fast on
downhill. He said that I rode faster than cars and now there I was getting patched up! I
laughed along, saying that I had just happened to lose control this time.

to sit in the car but for me it was just another normal injury. Then the bike
mechanic from Firefox told me the derailleur was damaged and he couldn't be
sure how long it would last. I decided to give it a try and started
riding again, but the derailleur broke after 5 km. I was very sad as now I wouldn't be able to ride my bike and dejectedly sat in the sweep car. But when the car happened to stop after about 2 min, I just knew I had to do it! So, I stepped
out of the car, wore my cycling gear again and told the team to arrange a spare
bike for me. They told me that it was 6-7 km away and asked me to sit inside
again, but I refused and ran till the next point with my injured knee. I was okay although
everyone was giving me shocked looks. I walked/ran till
the next point where I got a BSA bike, It was pretty heavy but I had to ride, so
I started off slowly this time as the bike was new to me and I was scared
of riding on a 1-1 gear combination, which seemed too much with the tough climbs
and a heavy bike only made things worse. But I did it.

And a routine for me in the past three years. But Thursday was different. My car broke down, so when I started for Parliament at 2:45 pm, I was in a hurry. For the entire 23-km stretch of the Noida expressway, I maintained a constant speed of 80 km an hour, even though the limit was 100 km.

Just when I reached the Mahamaya flyover at the end of the Expressway, around 10 km from Delhi, I noticed a white Volkswagen in my rear-view mirror, closing in at a menacing speed, zig-zagging its way through. In just a few seconds, the car flew past me from the left - the wrong side. My natural instinct was to slow down and resort to defensive driving. There were two cars ahead of me; one just in front and another to its left. In between, there was just about enough space for another car to squeeze in. And that's precisely what the speeding driver attempted, when a cyclist, riding against the traffic on the wrong lane, appeared in front of him.

It is standard practice on this stretch for cyclists, in the morning and evenings, to take the wrong side. Usually, the cyclists cross over in groups, 20-30 at a time. But this wasn't the case yesterday - a lone cyclist found himself in a front of a speeding car, being driven rashly. Within seconds, I saw the cyclist thrown up at least 10 feet above, and come down crashing as his head hit the ground.

Instinctively, I hit the brakes and my car screeched to a stop. As I froze for a few seconds, I saw the white car stopping a few feet away from the fallen cyclist.Just as I was getting out, the driver sped off. A motorcyclist just ahead of me gave chase and so did I. Luckily, he was forced to stop due to a flat tyre and we caught him about a km away.

The driver was a young boy, not more than 20. He told us he was a student of a private university in Noida and started dropping names, flaunting his connections. As I stopped a gathering crowd from hitting him, I asked, "Why did you leave the injured man and run away?" "Main aur karta yaar, (what else could I do, man?)," came the instant reply from the boy, almost 20 years younger to me. We called the police and hand over the boy to them.

The wounded cyclist had been taken to the Kailash hospital, around five km from the accident spot. He died five hours later. An ID card on him revealed that he was Vinod, 32, a resident of Madanpur Khadar, a low-income residential colony near Apollo Hospital in south Delhi.

The cops have arrested the young driver, who is the son of an eminent lawyer. And the case will now be fought in courts, where at least one party is well-versed with the rules of the game."

BikeTalk: It is very sad that yet another cyclist has been killed on our roads, though to be fair in this case the fault lay with the cyclist in flouting basic traffic rules. Having said that, the errant driver is even more guilty, not just for the dangerous driving, but far worse, his callous attitude. His reaction, "Main aur karta yaar", as a justification for running away knowing that he had grievously injured the cyclist, is the mindset of the motorists who remain unafraid of being punished by the law. Till the time such errant drivers are not held accountable and penalised for their actions, this attitude will not change. It is an earnest request to all Cyclists to practice and advocate safe riding. Please set an example for the others on the road. Although, it will not stop such incidents from occurring, it will definitely go a long way in preventing them.

Anju Khosla never imagined that some day she would find her calling as a pioneer woman cyclist. An Army kid, her school years at TAFS were focussed on being a career woman and her academic inclinations were amply evident as a JMC pass out with B.Com. Hons and a Masters in Business Economics from DU. With an internship at NIIT under her belt, she set out on a career path in the financial sector and as destiny would have it, that's where she met her future husband, Yogen. Marriage followed shortly and Yogen being a sports enthusiast lost little time in introducing Anju to the many joys of sports. In fact, her first pair of running shoes were bought while on their honeymoon at Goa, soon followed by forays into golf.

Early Years
Cycling happened to Anju in 2006 when Gagan Khosla, her brother-in-law, inspired by a solo cyclist doing the Leh-Manali route, went on to do the same with a few friends. Upon his return to Delhi, he started the cycling group, GKB with five members, Anju being one of them. It didn't take long for her to graduate from the short rides around Nehru Park on a borrowed bike to pedalling off for her first long ride from Manesar to Jaipur, the first of many as the endurance cycling bug bit her.

Memorable Ride
The Manali to Leh ride in 2010 has been the most memorable one she feels as it tested her limits and pushed her to the wall. The challenges ranged from increment weather conditions, inhospitable terrain, altitude sickness to having the thought, "god! another 8 hours of cycling today" flit across her mind. But all of that paled into the inconsequential realm when compared to the experience of being at one with nature, riding through the grand expanses of Leh and the unique bonding and camaraderie with fellow riders that comes about in such tough situations.

Toughest Ride
Anju cites her very first 200 km Brevet as the toughest ride, The first 70 km came by comfortably as she kept pace with a bunch of riders but at the 100 km mark the fatigue started to creep in, forcing her to slow down. The remaining 100 km were done with sheer will power and buddy spirit with fellow rider, Vijay, stopping to take a break virtually every 10 km, motivating each other, they went on to complete the Brevet together. The takeaways from this ride were the importance of keeping an easy pace, ensuring that the heart rate should not be too high; replenishing salt and water levels; and eating on time.

Challenging Ride

Desert 500 from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer in 2012, proved to be very challenging as Anju started to cramp after the first 100 km itself. At the 125 km mark, the cramps got worse and the thought of stopping to take a break, even giving up had to be brushed aside as she decided to keep going the best she could. Fortunately, relief came after she ate and rested at the Time Station, and the next 250 km went by comfortably. As she approached the end of her ride at the 500 km mark, she felt the euphoria of wanting to continue riding on for longer.

Achievements
Being a pioneer in the cycling fraternity, Anju is always willing to step out to motivate others to take up cycling. As a matter of fact, many women have taken up the sport on seeing her. She believes that if she can do it, anyone can. Her biggest motivation is the response of her children, as their sense of awe at her achievements give her immense satisfaction.

Cycling Partner
Anju and Yogen are the first couple of cycling and complement each other perfectly. They provide each other with the much needed push whenever the other person is down and are a source of constant support and company to each other on the rides. Downtime is spent on planning weekly rides and out station cycling trips with their group.

Cycling Means
Cycling to Anju means the spark that keeps her buzzing. It gives her a sense of the extraordinary in an ordinary life. Her week is divided into the 'up days' when she cycles and the 'something is missing' days when she doesn't.

As A Woman Cyclist
Not having other women to ride with has been a downside with regard to the social aspect of cycling. There are times she would have enjoyed riding in female company as men tend to have a more competitive streak. Therefore, on occasions when she doesn't want to feel guilty of holding anyone back, she ends up cycling by herself.

Cycling Scenario
People are more cycling friendly than was the case 7 years ago when Anju started out, though the insensitivity towards cyclists on the roads remains as bad. There's a lot that needs to be done with regard to the road conditions and traffic situation. A glimmer of hope comes with initiatives like dedicated cycling lanes but there's a long way to go still.

Tips For Nutrition While Riding
To neutralise the effect of burning about 600 cal/hour, an intake of 350-400 cal/hour is recommended.
Nimbu pani with electral and salt; Gaitorade are effective for keeping hydrated.
Banana; dates; jam sandwich; energy bars are good options while on the saddle.
Eat every half an hour, even if it's just a bite.

Advice For Beginners
Don't be in a hurry to get competitive.
Train over a period of time to test your body for long, fast distances.
Keep an intelligent pace.
Night riding needs a lot of caution.
Interval training helps a lot.

Cheers all!!
